Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is one of the most significant festivals for Indians worldwide. It symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and holds immense cultural value within the community.
In Malaysia, where multiculturalism is deeply woven into the fabric of society, Deepavali is celebrated with great enthusiasm by Malaysian Indian Hindus, along with Jains and Sikhs.
At IQI Global, we are dedicated to celebrating diversity and inclusion, and Deepavali allows us to honor the rich heritage of our Indian community.

What is Deepavali?
The origins of Deepavali are steeped in various narratives, each highlighting the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and the importance of light over darkness.
Derived from the Sanskrit words “Deepa” (light) and “Avali” (a row), Deepavali revolves around the stories of prominent figures in Hindu mythology, such as Lord Rama and Lord Krishna.
How is Deepavali Celebrated in Malaysia?
In Malaysia, Deepavali is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy, intertwining ancient traditions with the nation’s vibrant multicultural environment.
Malaysian Indian families prepare for the festival by cleaning and decorating their homes with colorful rangoli or kolam designs made from rice flour, symbolizing prosperity and welcoming good fortune.
The lighting of oil lamps (diyas) is central to the celebration, signifying the dispelling of negativity and the ushering in light and hope.
Open Houses
Similar to other Malaysian festivals, many Indian families host open houses during Deepavali. Friends and neighbours of all races and religions are invited to join the celebrations, fostering a sense of unity and togetherness.
Kolam Designs
Creating intricate kolam (or rangoli) designs using colored rice, flour, or flower petals is a common practice. These beautiful patterns are typically made at the entrance of homes to welcome guests and bring good luck.
Cultural Performances
In some areas, there are cultural performances such as traditional Indian dances and music, showcasing the rich heritage of the Indian community in Malaysia.
Henna Art
Applying henna designs on hands and feet is a popular tradition, especially among women. This practice adds to the festive spirit and is often done a day or two before Deepavali.
Temple Visits
Many Malaysian Indians visit temples to offer prayers and seek blessings. Temples are often beautifully decorated with lights and flowers, creating a serene and festive atmosphere.
Traditional Foods
Food plays a significant role in the celebrations as well.
Traditional sweets such as laddu, halwa, and murukku are prepared in abundance, with the tantalizing aromas of curries and biryanis filling homes.
