On Oct 10, Malaysia’s dissolution of the 14th Parliament was announced to make way for the 15th general election (GE15).
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who obtained the consent of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at Istana Negara a day prior, announced the dissolution of the Parliament in a special announcement at Perdana Putra on Oct 10.
The official Malaysia election date, expected to be in 2022, is yet to be finalized by the Election Commission (SPR), but is said to be set within 60 days of the dissolution of the Parliament, according to Article 55 (4) of the Federal Constitution.
“With this announcement, the mandate will be returned to the people. The people’s mandate is a powerful antidote to manifest political stability and to form a strong, stable, and respected government after GE15.”
The current government’s five-year mandate will expire in July 2023.
The prime minister advised the heads of state governments to obtain consent from their respective rulers and governors to dissolve their state assemblies in conjunction with the dissolution of the 14th Parliament, in order to hold the state elections concurrently with the GE15.
Ismail Sabri hopes that the people will use their influence to elect a government that would continue to implement the recently announced Budget 2023, uphold political stability, revitalise and strengthen the economy, and preserve harmony and unity within the multi-religious and multi-racial Malaysian Family.
“It is only right for the state elections to be held simultaneously to ensure that the people will not be burdened, besides ensuring smooth democratic process and reducing the overall costs,” said the prime minister.
He mentioned the determination of dates for the nomination of candidates, election day and other related matters would be subject to the decision of the Election Commission (SPR). Malaysians are advised to check their voting status through the SPR website to prepare themselves for the upcoming elections.
A total of 222 parliamentary seats are up for election in the GE15 to enable the formation of a new administration to govern the nation and its 32.4 million citizens.
