The QS World University Rankings recently released the latest rankings for 2023. In this list, Malaysia university rankings saw the promising performance of Malaysian universities, especially with UPM going up 20 spots. Although the ranking of UM has dropped by 5 places, it is still in the top of the list of Malaysian universities.

Top 10 University Rankings in Malaysia
24 Malaysian universities were listed in the QS world rankings, making it the highest amount of Malaysian universities to ever rank in the QS world rankings. Which local universities made the list? Let’s take a look!
1. University of Malaya (UM)
QS ranking: 70
Although the University of Malaya (UM)’s ranking has declined for three consecutive years; from 59th in 2021, 65th in 2022, to 70th in 2023, it is still the highest-ranked university among the shortlisted universities in Malaysia, and enjoys a world-class reputation internationally. It is one of the first-choice universities for many overseas students.
2. Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)
QS ranking: 123
UPM has seen an excellent performance in 2023, even advancing 20 places from 143rd in 2022 to 123rd in 2023. The school has an excellent reputation in the field of education and research, and is the world’s top research-oriented comprehensive university. In the latest scoring index “International Research Network”, it scored a high score of 85 points, and it is one of the famous research universities in Malaysia.
3. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
QS ranking: 129
UKM, which also has a strong performance in 2023, has risen 15 places to 129th from 144th in 2022. This university is also one of the famous research universities in Malaysia. In the 2023 scoring index, the international research network accounted for 76.5 points, which shows that the university is internationally recognized.
4. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)
QS ranking: 143
After falling by 5 positions in 2022, the ranking of USM finally rose to No. 143 in 2023. It is also one of the internationally renowned research universities in Malaysia. The school scored 79.6 in the “International Research Network” scoring index %, especially research in fields such as science, engineering and medicine which are known to be among the top in the world.
5. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)
QS ranking: 203
The ranking of UTM has declined for two consecutive years, and has even fallen out of the top 200 in the world, from 187th in 2021, 191st in 2022, to 203rd in 2023. Despite this, the school’s “International Research Network” scoring index scored 82.9 points, and the proportion of international students scored 77.2 points, showing a very high international reputation.
6. Taylor’s University, UCSI University
QS ranking: 284
Both Taylor’s University and UCSI University are among the famous private universities in Malaysia. Both of these universities have soared from the top 400 in 2022 to No. 284 in 2023, especially UCSI University.
Both institutions excelled in employability levels and outcomes, with Taylor’s achieving a high score of 80 for the Employer Reputation Score indicator and UCSI University’s score of 74.3 for employability outcomes.
8. Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP)
QS ranking: 361
The ranking of Petronas University in 2023 has also risen, rising 53 places from 414th in 2022. The school has been actively cooperating with other relevant institutions at home and abroad, maintaining close cooperation with industry organizations, and jointly conducting various researches. Therefore, it scored 65.5 points in the “International Research Network” scoring indicator.
9. Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM)
QS ranking: 481
UUM has risen from the top 520 in 2022 to 481 in 2023. Although the ranking is not as high as the above-mentioned government universities, the school’s excellent academic and diploma certification has made it one of the ideal universities for overseas students.
10. Management and Science University (MSU), Sunway University (Sunway University)
QS ranking: 601-650
Both MSU University and Sunway University are well-known private universities in Malaysia. Their outstanding performance will rank between 601-650 in 2023. In particular, ever since Sunway University entered the list in 2020, its ranking has been within the range of 751- 800, and has continued to rise to 600 or less.
As for MSU University, its education and teaching meets the strict standards of international institutions, and its teaching system and international academic standards have also won many awards. Therefore, it attracts overseas students to enroll in the school, and scored 74.5 points in the “International Student Ratio” scoring indicator.
