Meanwhile, more than 20 championships have been held in which over 40 songs have been defined. This year the FIFA Championship 2022 will be hosted in Qatar. Therefore, we’d like to bring you in the mood by listing the most memorable FIFA Anthems of all time.
Waka Waka – Shakira (2010)
Starting with an anthem that has reached the top charts as one of the best-selling singles of all time, with 15 million downloads worldwide. Waka Waka (This time for Africa) by the Colombian singer Shakira reached its title in 2019 and was FIFA’s anthem in 2010. The song is based on an original Cameroonian song Zamina Mina (Zangaléwa), sung by Golden Sounds, and has been rewritten and reproduced by Shakira and John Hill. To this day, people are still getting pumped when the song comes up in clubs and parties.
Wavin’ Flag – K’naan (2010)
A year before Shakira made her debut, a Somali Canadian singer, K’naan, released Waving Flag. Wavin’ Flag had been chosen to be Coca-Cola’s promotional Anthem for the FIFA championship the following year, 2010. The song was originally written about K’naans youth and him growing up in the war-torn African country Somalia. For the song to fit the FIFA World Cup Championship, it was rewritten with the help of Bruno Mars. The original version’s lyrics about “so many settling wars, settling scores” was replaced by lyrics about champions taking the field. The original single reached #2 on the Canadian Hot 100 and topped the charts in countries including Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
We are One (Pitbull ft. Jennifer Lopez & Claudia Leitte) (2014)
Mister Worldwide could not have been missed as one of the singers of the World Champion Anthem song. The Cuban American singer Pitbull has reached this point in his career with the song We Are One, featuring American singer Jennifer Lopez and Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte. The single peaked in three countries and has reached the top 20 in Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, and the world cup host country Brazil. Despite its success, it has also received some criticism from Brazilians, the host country of FIFA 2014. Most of this was due to a lack of Brazilian feeling, which could have been avoided by choosing Brazilian singers, according to the critics. Therefore, a second version was released where the music was changed slightly to fit the Afro-Brazilian group Olodum’s drumming style.
We are the Champions – Queen (1977)
We are the champions (1977), a title that represents that we are all the winners. This song has been one of the most recognizable anthems and has often been used for other sports events throughout the years. Scientific research in 2011 has even stated that the song has been the catchiest in the history of pop music; with that being said, it is no surprise that the song has topped multiple charts and was voted as the world’s favourite song in 2005. The well-known British band Queen writes the song with their lead singer Freddie Mercury.
La Copa de la Vida – Ricky Martin (1998)
Last but not least, the best World Cup anthem of all time, according to multiple publications, is La Copa de la Vida, in other words, “The Cup of Life.” In 1998 the song was released by Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin and requested to be that year’s Anthem. Naturally, this song has been chosen to be the best as it carries a soccer-heavy message and has a lot of positive energy. Ricky Martin performed the song at the 1998 FIFA World Cup Final, which gave him worldwide exposure and led him to be an international star.
