World, rejoice – the FIFA World Cup is approaching!
Much has happened since the last World Cup in 2018. The outbreak of COVID-19 has put a hold to many anticipated events, but after a long period of isolation, we are gradually moving towards normalcy, with looser restrictions and safer ways to travel.
The FIFA World Cup, which happens every four years is now back for the 22nd time – and better than ever!
When is the 2022 FIFA World Cup taking place?
It is scheduled to take place from 21 November to 18 December 2022.

There are 32 qualified teams that will be competing in the World Cup.
Now that we’ve gotten through the basics, here are 4 fun facts you should know about this year’s FIFA World Cup!
1. First World Cup in an Arab country
This year’s World Cup will be the first ever tournament held in the Arab world! It is also the second World Cup held entirely in Asia after the tournament in South Korea and Japan in 2002.
2. First World Cup held during winter season
Summers in Qatar can be intense, reaching temperatures as high as 50 degrees Celsius. In order to overcome the challenges that may arise due to the scorching weather, the World Cup will be held from late-November to mid-December, making it the first tournament not to be held in May, June, or July. It will be played in a reduced timeframe of around 28 days, and will be the first World Cup to be held in winter.
3. A special end to the FIFA World Cup
The final is due to be held on 18 December 2022 – the same day as Qatar National Day!
4. Lowest number of venues in a World Cup
This year’s World Cup will be held in a total of eight stadiums, making it the lowest number of venues for a World Cup in recent years. In addition to that, seven of these stadiums were built from scratch – only one stadium was renovated in preparation to host FIFA 2022.
