Ah yes, welcome to the technical part of Artificial Intelligence.
We don’t want to keep you in the dark. Although you may know what AI is on the surface, we want you to dive a little deeper. And hey, wouldn’t it be cool that you knew a little bit more than just what AI is?
The million dollar question – what’s the difference between artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning?
We’ll try our best to help you understand it in the simplest way possible. Let’s get into it!
Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) vs. Deep Learning (DL) |
1. Artificial Intelligence (AI)
What is AI? Let’s have a refresher.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in computer systems, enabling them to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, problem-solving, and language understanding.
AI systems are designed to mimic cognitive functions, allowing machines to process information, adapt to different situations, and learn from experience.
A bit confusing, still, right? Okay, let’s put it this way:
Imagine having a computer that can think and make decisions like a human. That’s the big idea behind AI.
AI can solve problems, learn from experience, and get better over time.

2. Machine Learning (ML)
Now, let’s move on to Machine Learning.
Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that uses data to recognize patterns, make predictions, or take actions, and they become more accurate or proficient at a task as they gain more exposure to relevant data.
ML learns by observing numerous examples from the data it encounters.
For instance, in image recognition, ML algorithms analyze thousands of labeled images to understand what a specific object looks like from various angles, under different lighting conditions, and against different backgrounds.
Through this extensive exposure, ML becomes proficient at recognizing similar objects in new, unseen images.

3. Deep Learning (DL)
Deep Learning (DL) is a subfield of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on the use of artificial neural networks to model and solve complex problems.
What sets deep learning apart from traditional machine learning is the use of deep neural networks, which are composed of multiple layers of interconnected nodes or “neurons.”
And, fun fact, DL is a special type of ML inspired by our brains!
This neural network is the foundation of DL’s thinking and decision-making capabilities. Just as the human brain processes information through neurons, DL processes data through its intricate web of digital neurons.
To give you a clearer picture, this graph from levity.ai sums it up best:
And in case you’re still confused, this video can give you a good start:
What did we learn so far? Let’s summarize it:
AI is about making computers smart like humans. ML helps computers learn from data and make predictions. DL is a super-smart version of ML that uses computer “neurons” to solve big problems.
So, whether it’s making your phone understand your voice or helping doctors diagnose diseases, these technologies are making the world smarter. Understanding these differences will help you see how they’re used in everyday life and the exciting things they can do in the future.
