In an effort to accelerate industrialization in Sabah, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has stated that the government will be focusing on bringing in foreign investors.
Datuk Shafie stated that any investment must have an impact in terms of providing job opportunities for the local populace and in creating economic spin-offs.
He added that in line with this objective, the appointment of Parti Warisan Sabah deputy president Darell Leiking as International Trade and Industry Minister, and the appointment of Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi as the Minister of Tourism and Culture, bode well for the development of Sabah.
He also mentioned how people were impatient for change, bringing how the Warisan campaigned on a mandate for change. The people had high expectations and so the pledges made in the manifesto needed to carried out as soon as possible.
The Sabah government is pushing for the development of downstream industries in palm oil as well as training locals in skills to avoid dependence on foreign workers. The aim is to encourage these industry activities and create jobs in sawmills and the furniture industry. The time had come to revamp the education system in Sabah so that students may acquire the necessary qualifications that will help them later in the job market.
The state government and the people had faced many challenges, despite that they would continue to persevere. The target for the state government is to use its resources to maximise the benefits of the people as a whole.
