The friendship between Malaysia and Canada is a long-standing one because of shared values and ideals. Canada’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Julia Bentley, has said that Canada would like to increase trade, education and cooperation relations with Sabah, Malaysia.<\/p>\n

While paying a courtesy visit to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, Bentley has stated that Canada hopes to work with the Sabah state government in the following sectors: water treatment, information and communications technology, waste management, and infrastructure and energy development, because the country possesses expertise in these areas.<\/p>\n

They also want to offer the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) Scholarships for short-term learning. These scholarships have been set up for the first time this year and are meant for students from the ASEAN region. A total of 13 Malaysian students have been selected for this scholarship.<\/p>\n

Canada is also offering financial grants via the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), to non-governmental organizations and local organizations who wish to implement small-scale projects.<\/p>\n

CFLI focuses on areas like the Rights of the Orang Asli, the Empowerment of Women and Girls, and Environment and Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n

What will this mean for the future of Sabah? How will the relationship between the two nations progress? As it stands now, the outlook seems positive.<\/p>\n
